Hi parents and scholars. Another week is in the books. This week students will receive their progress reports. Please be aware that these do not reflect the overall grade, as we have missed a week worth. Many grades will go up by the 3rd nine weeks quarter grade. Feel free to email if any questions or concerns.

This week we will be hitting the capitalization rules. There are more than students think! It seems easy, yet students can be careless about placing capitals correctly in sentences and paragraphs. We will also be working on User Friendly and After 2o Weeks in our Literature books. Both will cover reading skills essential for the CRCT. Classes will also be working on practice CRCT questions as warm-ups starting this week. Hope everyone has a great week!

Week of January 31st through February 4th

Hello again parents and scholars. We are on the 4th week of a shortened 9 weeks, thanks to our week off. We finished up subject/verb agreement and pronoun/antecedent agreement. We are currently working on verb tenses and participles, and we will have a quiz by Wednesday or Thursday over verbs. Upon completion of our verbs, we will start working on capitalization rules and practice.
In our literature book, we will be reading the story User Friendly, discussing cause and effect and characterization. We will be also working on The Only Girl in the World for Me, to also work on characterization and main idea. We will be in our spelling books as well, moving on to the next lesson, 10 for on-level, and 9 for advanced. I hope everyone has/had a great weekend, and let us have another great week.

Week of January 24th through January 28th

Greetings parents and scholars. Another full week of school finally here. We finished up last week with a subject/verb agreement quiz and a spelling test. This week we will busy again. We will be reviewing pronouns and their antecedent agreement, and then switching gears to verb tenses for our grammar. We will also be working on this week’s spelling lesson and taking a spelling test on Friday.

We will wrap up theme and Song of the Trees on Monday, and spend the rest of the week on characters and characterization with A Day’s Wait from the literature book. Both of these reading skills are on the CRCT. The students will continue to do DGP as a warm-up as well.

This week is also our Checkpoint Testing. We will do this for Language Arts either Tuesday or Wednesday. These tests are not for a grade; they measure where the students are at with the standards and what we still have to cover for the CRCT in April. Let’s have a good week.

Week of January 18th through January 21st

Welcome back everyone from our extended winter break. This week we will get back into full swing. Report cards will go home on Wednesday, January 19th. This week we will continue subject/verb agreement. We will also be working again in our spelling books, and having a spelling test on Friday. We will also be working on themes and rereading Song of the Trees from the Literature book. We started the story before reading our novels, so we are going back to finish it. We will also be picking a journal this week to write in a formatted paragraph. We will have a subject/verb agreement quiz on Friday, January 21st.

Week of January 3rd through January 7th

Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had a restful break and is ready to come back for our second semester! This week is shortened by two days. We will be going over the quizzes on phrases and clauses on Wednesday, as well as having class spelling bees to determine the representatives for the school-wide bee. Thursday and Friday we will continue to review types of sentences and clauses, as well as start subject/verb agreement. The students will have homework this week, so please check the homework page or ask your scholar. Again, welcome back!

Week of December 20th through December 22nd

Hello parents and students. Welcome to the last week of the 1st semester. We only have three days this week, although they will be busy. Monday, the 20th, the research papers are due. Tuesday, the 21st is our quiz on phrases, clauses, and sentence types. I will have a study session on Tuesday morning at 7:45 to help any last questions for the quiz. Wednesday we might be working on some relaxing activities to wind down the semester. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and stay warm. See you next year!

Week of December 13th through December 17th

Greetings parents and scholars. This week will be in the computer lab Monday through Thursday. We will be finishing up the research papers the students started last week in the library. The papers should be turned by Friday, the 17th. The finished result is not as important as the research itself or the students summarizing what they read. The concepts the students are learning about for the research include not plagiarizing and how to cite a source correctly using MLA Style 7. Upon completion of the paper, students will be working on some grammar and reading review in the computer lab. We will also be finishing up types of clauses and sentences as well. There really will be no homework this week. Have a good week everyone.

Week of December 6th through December 10th

Greetings parents and scholars. Another week closer to winter break and the end of the semester. We finished our novels, and spent last week learning about independent/dependent clauses. The students are switching gears a bit this week, as we will be in the library working on our research papers. Each student received the topics and rubric on Friday of last week to discuss what they will be working on this week. All the topics are Science related, so we can be teaching across disciplinarians. All six topics are standards the students have to master for the CRCT in Science. The research paper itself is a standard for Language Arts. The students have to be able to research and cite their sources correctly. The entire week, as well as most of next week, will be devoted to the research papers.

The only break in the middle of these research papers will be on Wednesday, 12/8. We will be taking our second Checkpoint Test for English/Reading. These checkpoint tests help teachers and students determine what we need to cover as standards for the CRCT and to see where the students are at in the learning process. The tests are done on bubble sheets, and the results go on SAMS for teachers to view the results. Hope everyone has a great week!

Final Post of the 2009-2010 school year

Hello parents and students. Today is/was the last day of 6th grade for the students! We had an awesome year, and I truly enjoyed all of the students and their hard work. I had a great experience watching your scholars grow from the beginning to the end. Hopefully I get to see everyone back next year, except for those moving. Good luck at your new schools Olivia, Breanne, Dominic, (maybe) Sofia, and anyone else I missed. To everyone else, have a wonderful summer and relax, you earned it! Please continue to read and write though and have a good time in 7th grade. I will see you all soon!
